There were undoubtedly many eyes on the Grammys red carpet this past weekend, and none of them would have missed the debacle surrounding the so-called ‘non-dress’ worn by Kanye West’s wife, Bianca Censori.
Chances are that you’ll have seen the pictures of the Australian model’s outfit for the evening. If you haven’t, then let me tell you that controversial is a relative understatement.
Jokes have already been made that she should henceforth be dubbed “Bianca Censored”, after the 30-year-old removed her black fur coat to reveal… well, essentially nothing beneath.
She and husband Kanye then posed for pictures which would make their way around the world in no time at all, evoking mixed reactions from fans. There were those celebrating free choice, as well as Censori’s (or Kanye’s, depending on who you ask) bold decision to attend one of the year’s biggest events naked.
Yet there were arguably a good deal more people ready to level criticism at the pair.
”She needs to just put all that away… I’m all for women empowering their bodies, but this?” one user wrote on X.
Another penned: ”Aren’t there laws against this sort of thing?”
”It’s shocking but also so sad. That’s someone’s daughter that he’s brainwashed.”, a third added.
If you’ve followed Kanye and Bianca over the past couple of years, you’ll know that attention-grabbing wardrobe choices have become the norm. Whether it’s at high-end red carpet events or simply strolling the streets, Censori has courted controversy on the regular by way of opting for outfits that are sensational to say the least.
But this one, I think we can all agree, trumped all others.
The hype surrounding ‘Ye’ and Censori’s appearance on the Grammy’s red carpet on Sunday soon hit fever-pitch, with all manner of rumors and speculation following suit. One suggested that the pair had been escorted out of the awards after their moment in the spotlight, with it being erroneously reported that they hadn’t been invited.
Kanye himself took to Instagram yesterday to swiftly and definitively refute that idea, and since the 47-year-old was nominated for Best Rap Song at this year’s Grammys for his track Carnival, we’re inclined to believe him.
And yet whether or not they actually had tickets to the event played second-fiddle to the “non-dress” we mentioned earlier, and it should speak volumes about the interest its garnered that people are still picking apart the moment Censori unveiled her body days after the fact.
As often happens after such happenings, lip readers have offered their services to try and shed new light on what the people involved might have said. Earlier this week, one claimed that Kanye had a set of “creepy” instructions for his wife as she prepared to drop the fur coat she was wearing.
Speaking with the Daily Mail, lip-reading expert Nicola Hickling deciphered the conversation between the couple on the red carpet, starting with the moment Censori had her back turned to cameras.
According to Hickling, the Yeezy founder told his wife: “You’re making a scene now.” He then encouraged Censori by adding, “Make a scene, I’ll say it’ll make so much sense,” the expert claims.
The Australian model nodded, and Hickling suggests Kanye then said: “Drop it behind you and then turn, I got you.”
“Alright let’s go,” Censori replied, according to Hickling.
As if that wasn’t enough, another lip reader has now weighed in to decipher the possible ‘command’ Ye gave to photographers and red carpet staff just moments before the big reveal.
Speaking to The Sun, a lip reader claimed the rapper appeared to say: “Does that make sense, push that out of the way…that person right there.”
The expert went on to state their belief that West was manuevering staff to ensure the cameras had an unobstructed view of his wife as she shed her coat.
