And when the diamond facets cease to sparkle and shimmer in your eyes, and dollars begin to flash, you begin to look at the colors of precious stones somehow differently. What color of a diamond is the most expensive – we understand further (prices are indicated for 1 carat).
1.Red – $3,913,894
Red diamonds are incredibly rare, which is why they are the most expensive in the world. For example, a 5.11 carat Moussaieff Red Diamond was sold for $20 million. It is scary to imagine what would happen if the red stones were large (the larger the diamond, the more valuable it is). But even a 5.11 carat Moussaieff Red Diamond costs more than the famous Cullinan I – Big Star of Africa (530.2 carats), if you count per unit weight.
2.Blue – $3,343,589
Blue diamonds regularly appear in the TOPs of the most precious jewels. This is Hope, and Wittelsbach, and the Heart of the Ocean. But the most expensive in terms of weight was Zoe – the rarest blue stone of incomparable purity. It was sold for $32.6 million at Sotheby’s, making it the most expensive per carat.
3.Orange – $2,398,151
Bright and transparent, exceptionally pure and rich in color (these properties are especially valued in colored diamonds) – “Orange” weighing 14.82 carats was sold for 35.5 million dollars. This sale was a record in the history of sales of orange-colored stones.
4.Pink – $1,862,792
It is the pink diamond that retains the title of “the most expensive in the world”, this is the “Pink Star”. But one more record holder is more expensive by weight – the 24.78-carat “Pink Graff”, the rarest type IIa. Its exceptional color was valued at $46.16 million by bidders.
5.Purple – $1,413,427
Perhaps even more rare than red is a purple diamond, but they are almost never found in nature in a pure color. That’s why Argyle Violet has caused such a stir – despite the low weight of 2.83 carats, it is going to sell for $ 4 million. It’s hard to believe, but in the 32 years of operation of the mine in which the purple handsome man was found, only 12 carats of stones of such a rare shade were found in it.
6.Green – $250,000
Green diamonds of a decent weight cannot be found on sale. One-carat stones can be purchased, as guides say, starting from $250,000, but really large diamonds are in collections and the owners are in no hurry to part with them.
7.Yellow – $112,697
Yellow diamonds are generally of low value, unless we are talking about stones with a history, like the Sancy, or exceptional bright and large specimens, such as the Sun Drop. It was the last “heavyweight” (110.03 carats) that became the most expensive yellow diamond sold at Sotheby’s for $12.4 million.
8.Gray – $39,693
Gray stones rarely have jewelry value, but when it comes to unique jewelry, the price can go up. The so-called “Diamond Sultan of Morocco” gray with a weight of 35.27 carats cost the buyer 250 thousand US dollars (in current prices – 1.4 million dollars). But there are a number of things that made it so expensive. Firstly, it is a gray-blue diamond, one of the largest, and secondly, it belonged to the Yusupov princes, that is, it has a certain history.
9.Brown – $30,303
Prices for brown diamonds depend on the hue of the color, its saturation and size. The most expensive are red-brown tones, but pure brown will cost much less than colorless stones.
10.Black – $10,433
For a long time, jewelers refused to deal with black diamonds, because all the beauty of these stones is in their purity and the play of light on the edges. But there are exceptions. For example, the Black Orlov or Amsterdam diamond is 33.74 carats in size. The last stone became the most expensive (by weight) of black diamonds ever sold. It was sold at Christie’s for 352,000.
