Marlon Wayans has slammed cancel culture as well as those who criticize
his 2004 comedy White Chicks. In fact, Wayans believes movies like White
Chicks are “needed”.
The iconic flick stars Wayans and his brother, Shawn Wayans, as two FBI
agents who go undercover by disguising themselves as white women.
Over the years, the movie has become a point of contention in discussions
around political correctness and it’s often said that it could not have been
released today.
Wayans, 50, spoke to BuzzFeed recently about the way the movie is
perceived through today’s lens and argued that this means “we can’t laugh
anymore”.
When asked if a movie like White Chicks could “thrive” in this day and age
considering the “stricter forms of censorship”, Wayans responded: “I think
[movies like White Chicks are] needed.”
He continued: “I don’t know what planet we’re on, where you think people
don’t need laughter, and that people need to be censored and canceled. If a
joke is gonna get me canceled, thank you for doing me that favor.
“It’s sad that society is in this place where we can’t laugh anymore. I ain’t
listening to this damn generation. I ain’t listening to these folks: These
scared-ass people, these scared executives.
“Y’all do what you want to do? Great. I’m still gonna tell my jokes the way I
tell them. And if you want to make some money, jump on board. And if not,
then I’ll find a way to do it myself.
“I know my audience. My audience comes to my shows every weekend and
they leave feeling great and laughing. One thing about the Wayans, we’ve
always told the worst joke the best way.”
Wayans’ comments come after an interview he did with GQ in May, in
which he opened up about how grueling the filming schedule for White
Chicks was on him and his brother. According to him, they would spend 14
hours a day shooting scenes.
“That movie almost killed us,” he said. “Seven hours of makeup. We’d work
14 hours after that. It takes an hour to get the makeup off. Shawn and I
would get two hours of sleep for, like, 65 days, or 60 days.”
