Selena Gomez recently stated that Taylor Swift is her only friend in the industry. Her statement made many people question her priorities, including her relationship with her kidney donor, Francia Raisa.
In the latest interview with Rolling Stone, Gomez opened up about her mental health struggles and her new Apple TV+ documentary, My Mind and Me.
The thirty-year-old musician revealed that the Love Story singer was her biggest support during her dark times and didn’t leave her alone.
“I never fit in with a cool group of girls that were celebrities,” said Selena. “My only friend in the industry really is Taylor [Swift], so I remember feeling like I didn’t belong.”
“I felt the presence of everyone around me living full lives. I had this position, and I was really happy, but…was I? Do these materialistic things make me happy? I just didn’t like who I was, because I didn’t know who I was.”
Part of her statement was shared on E News’s official Instagram account, where many people commented, including Francia, who didn’t sound much pleased with Gomez’s statement.
“This friendship? It comes naturally. Tag the Taylor to your Selena,” the caption read.
Raisa, who is known for her roles as an actress in Grown-ish, How I Met Your Mother, Bring It On, and The Secret Life of the American Teenager, also dropped a comment under the post and wrote, “Interesting.”
The 34-year-old deleted her comment after a while and also unfollowed Selena on Instagram.
Apparently, Francia wasn’t the only one to raise an eyebrow over Selena’s comment, but many fans of the singer also questioned her relationship with her life savior.
“What about Francia? I mean, she gave Selena a Kidney,” one person commented.
“That means a lot but that’s seems kinda disrespectful to the woman who donated her kidney to her,” said another.
“Does anyone know what happen to her friendship with Francia Raisa? She gave Selena one of her kidneys so I’m really surprised she didn’t include her on her list along with Taylor’s,” another commented.
“What about that girl that gave her that organ? I don’t recall her name but, she is in the industry unless they related or something…” someone wrote.
Meanwhile, many others said it is no big deal if Selena didn’t mention anyone other than Taylor and that people should leave her alone.
“She only talked about Taylor because she’s the only one in the business!!!! Why are so many upset? Francia is not a superstar!!! she doesn’t follow sel anymore, why? No attention in the documentary? It was about Selena’s illness, feelings and fears, not about the donor of the kidney!!!!” said one.
“She’s referring to the music industry which Francia isn’t a part of. She refers to Francia as family. This woman constantly has to defend everything she does/says; it’s wild.” wrote another.
After her statement went viral in an unexpectedly dramatic manner, Gomez commented on a TikTok and said she didn’t know she had to mention everyone in a single comment.
“Sorry I didn’t mention every person I know.” She wrote.
In 2017, Francia donated one of her kidneys to Selena when she battled with a life-threatening disease, Lupus.
The singer shared an emotional post on her Instagram at that time featuring Raisa and wrote,
“There aren’t words to describe how I can possibly thank my beautiful friend Francia Raisa. She gave me the ultimate gift and sacrifice by donating her kidney to me. I am incredibly blessed. I love you so much sis.”
“Lupus continues to be very misunderstood but progress is being made. For more information regarding Lupus please go to the Lupus Research Alliance website: www.lupusresearch.org/ -by grace through faith.”
